TRACK IS BACK

The Hill City track and field team opened the 2008 season at the Hot Springs Developmental track meet on Thursday. The early season meet served as a fitness benchmark for athletes and coaches alike. With no relays and just four teams competing, the meet raced by with little recovery time between events.

Nonetheless, many Rangers had outstanding marks for this time of year and some Rangers even set personal bests in their first meet of the season.

The Lady Rangers had a multiple event winner with freshman Stephanie Qualm ruling the middle distances. Qualm won the 1600 (5:51.9) and the 800 (2:43.3) meter races. Alise Kelting was 3rd in the same 800 meter race (2:52.0) and 6th in the 100 meter hurdles.

In other track events, Mariah Asheim ran a strong race, winning the 400 meter dash (67.8) followed by Makenzie Swanson who was 3rd in 70.9. Freshman Jessica McDonald owned the 200 meters, running 28.9 for first place honors.

The girl's field events looked ever promising and was paced by Stephanie Burleson setting her personal best in the shot put, placing 2nd in 31'8 1/2". Burleson was also 4th in the discus with a heave of 89'6". Kelby Weiderhold was 5th in the high jump (4'0") and 6th in the long jump (13'11 1.2"). Jessica McDonald added a 3rd place finish in the high jump(4'2").

The Hill City boys placed in every event and came out with the gold medal in five races!

A newcomer to the Ranger track team this year, Jacob Allen, won three events. Allen took first in the 110 meter hurdles (16.4), the 300 meter hurdles (45.3) and had an outstanding early season triple jump (41'4") to help his team with another first place. Following Allen in the 110 hurdle race was Colton McLaughlin (2nd-19.7) who also sprinted to 4th in the 300 meter hurdle race (48.3). Finishing 3rd in the same 300 meter hurdle race was freshman Kyle Alexander in 47.6. Alexander also did well in the high jump, finishing 2nd (5'4").

Andy Coy and Hudson Koel, two of the best distance runners in the state, showed exceptional range, finishing 1st and 2nd respectively in the 1600 meter and 200 meter runs. Coy ran 4:43.6/23.5 and Koel was 4:51.46/24.2 for the two races.

Also displaying his abilities in races on opposite ends of the event list was Adrian Salinas, who ran 11.9 to finish 2nd in the 100 meters. Immediately following the 100 meter race, Salinas ran 5:13.1 to finish 3rd in a 1-4 Ranger sweep of the 1600 meters. John Bintliff was 4th in the same race (5:15.0).

Clint Lewis set a personal best in the 3200 meters to finish 2nd (11:10.7). Lewis placed 5th in the 800 meters later in the day. Sophomore Chance Clason placed in three sprint events (4th 100- 12.0; 3rd 200- 25.0; 2nd 400- 56.0). Andy Quenzer set a personal record in the 400 meters, placing 3rd (56.4). He was also 6th in the 800 meter race.

The Ranger boys had a plethora of placers in the field events as well. Freshman Justin Klein placed in three events (3rd triple jump- 35'5"; 5th long jump-16'4"; 5th high jump- 5'2"). McLaughlin placed in the field as well, jumping 16'10" in the long jump for 4th place. Tyler Dewsbury was 5th in the triple jump for the Rangers. In the shot put, two Rangers threw farther than they ever have before with Quint Wooldridge chucking the shot 36'4" for 3rd. Right behind him was Trevor Rossknecht with a throw of 36'2 3/4". Rossknecht was also 5th in the discus (100'5").

The Ranger will compete (cross your fingers for good weather) at the Douglas Early Bird Meet, Saturday, March 29th. Events begin at 10:00 am. If you've never been to a Ranger track meet, this would be a great chance to see your local student-athletes compete!
