Dominick Robinson, ranked #18 in the USA by DyeStat.com crushed the course record, running 16:16 on the monsterous Spearfish cross country course this Thursday, September 4th.



Riley Coates, just a sophomore, from Rapid City Stevens ran a break-out race, finishing in second place ahead of Class A standout Andy Coy of Hill City. Alec Espeland of Pierre, a 4:23 miler and AA 800m champ was 4th followed by Damien Schuster of Sturgis in 5th.



Rapid City Stevens took the boy's team title without one of their top runners in the mix. RC Stevens will surely be a Class AA contender by the end of the season.



The boy's individual race was taken out at a furious pace by Campbell County's Robinson. Espeland of Pierre tried to match Robinson's early pace, but the 9:07 3200 meter runner was just too strong. At the 7 minute mark, Riley Coates of Rapid City Stevens gradually moved up and caught Espeland. Later in the race, Hill City's Coy and Espeland, two 1:55 800 meter runners, battled for the 3rd spot, with Coy eventually having a 14 second advantage. Schuster of Sturgis ran well again, finishing a consistent 5th place.



In the girl's race, Sheridan put on a great performance, winning the girl's title over a strong RC Stevens squad. Lela Carpenter of Sheridan was overly impressive, running 15:14.46 on the tough Spearfish course. AA reigning champ Madeline Takahashi was 2nd, and 16 seconds behind the Sheridan star. Bailey Eich of Douglas was the only other South Dakotan in the top five, finishing 4th in 16:07.53.



The next meet for many of these schools is the Augustana Meet of Champions next Saturday in Sioux Falls.
