Elks Invitational Brings in Great Field....AGAIN!

RC Journal Article

HHRC PREVIEW

The Rapid City Elks Invitational brought together some of the best high school runners in South Dakota and Wyoming to gut out some 4k and 5k footraces.

An unseasonally warm day coupled with a slight wind didn't bode well for fast times.  In the sport of cross country, however, the numbers on the stopwatch are of secondary importance to the all-important place in which you cross the finish line for yourself and for your team.

The boy's race featured Dominick Robinson of Campbell County, WY.  Robinson has been ranked among the Top 25 harriers in the USA all season and showed again that his 9:07 3200m from last year was no joke.  Robinson took an early lead, followed by Tom Kjerengtroen of RC Stevens, who was up to the task of giving Robinson company up front.  The rest of the pack settled in 10 seconds back at the 1 mile mark.  Robinson, the defending WY 4A State Champ, kept a 10 second-per-mile advantage and Kjerengtroen's couragous attempt to stay with Robinson failed as RC Stevens Super Sophomore and Aberdeen Central's Josh Wilson worked together to catch Kjerengtroen at about the 3k mark or so.  Robinson cruised to the win in 16:17, followed by Coates of RC Stevens (16:39), Andy Coy (Hill City) 16:40 and Josh Wilson (AC) 16:41.   Kjerengtroen (RCS) held for 5th place.

The RC Stevens boys ran a phenominal race with three runners under 17 minutes on a day that wasn't optimal for fast running.  The RC Stevens boys out-distanced a very good Campbell County team by 30 points.

In the girl's race, Cheyenne Central and Sheridan runners filled four out of the top five spots. Sophomore Jessica Lemasters (Ch. Central) is the defending Wyoming 4A State Champion and raced like it, taking a commanding lead at the 3k mark over Lela Carpenter and Dana Morin, both of Sheridan HS, who would finish second and third.  Another Cheyenne Central runner, Christie Schiel was fourth.  Madeline Takahashi, the South Dakota reigning state champ was fifith.  Cheyenne Central.

The girl's team race was incredible with Cheyenne Central winning by a single point over RC Stevens and Sheridan just three points behind RC Stevens for third!
