Very seldom do the words, "University of Oregon" enter a runner's mind without immediately
drifting back into the glory days of track and field. We think of distance running heroes still
discussed some thirty years later. They were the University of Oregon legends: Steve Prefontaine, Coach Bill Bowerman,
Olympic medal winner and coach, Bill Dellinger, and Alberto Salazar to mention just a few.
The following HHRC Q&A with former University of Oregon distance runner Steve
Bence gives a glimse into the glory years of track and field. Stories of Bowerman and his "Men of
Oregon", as well as some of the training that Oregon Distance Coach Bill Dellinger prescribed for runners like
the legenday Steve Prefontaine.
I'd like to personally extend a huge THANK YOU to Steve Bence for taking
us back in time to the glory days of track and field! Not only did Mr. Bence take the time for the interview, but
he supplied in-depth answers to every question that left me reading and re-reading his writing for hours on end.
I hope you enjoy discovering the University of Oregon through Steve Bence!
