There are great champions waiting to develop right here in Rapid City...

The following training books are where the majority of the training we will do comes from.  If you're interested in training- and want to know why we are going a certain type of training, these are your resources.

WINNING RUNNING by Bill Dellinger
Dellinger was the man that made all of the calls during Oregon's outstanding run as one of the world's top running machines.  Dellinger coached the guy who made running cool, Steve Prefontaine.  His training is just a flat-out great, common-sense approach that really takes a look at making workouts fit the demands of the race you are training for.

DANIELS' RUNNING FORMULA by Dr. Jack Daniels
Runner's World calls Dr. Daniels the "World's Best Running Coach".  I'm not entirely concerned about the opinion of Runner's World, but I do know that this guy is great.  I was able to meet him last summer at a clinic he put on in Rapid City.  He is the father of scientifically-based training, he created some nice table that I refer to often: VDOT tables.  VDOT tables simply put us at the correct intensity level for the type of workout we are doing.   I have used Daniels' periodization principles every season to properly peak runners.

BETTER TRAINING FOR DISTANCE RUNNERS by Peter Coe and Dr. David Martin
What I gained most from this book is the concept of incorporating different types of training into the yearly cycle.

RUNNING THE LYDIARD WAY by Arthur Lydiard
The father of modern endurance training, Lydiard did amazing things with distance runners from little New Zealand.  I closely follow Lydiard's Old School concept of aerobic-based training.  In our training, we use Lydiard's philosophy blended with modern physiology.

ROAD TO THE TOP by Dr. Joe Vigil
I was able to listen to Dr. Vigil speak just a few weeks ago in Spearfish.  Vigil opened my eyes into what athletes can achieve.  Our training volume and intensity is inspired by Vigil's message, "You just have to shoot for the top."
